Our first couple of days teaching

Why was the teacher wearing sunglasses to school?

She had bright students

31st January 2020

So finally the holiday had come to an end. We arrived back in Hai Phong with a couple of days to truly relax before heading back to what we came to do. Teaching. Now, before actually going into a classroom we had to make sure we were prepared. Each week we have to pick up our materials for the weeks worth of classes and use ther adviced lesson plans to create our own style of teaching. When we started and only needed about two classes worth this was okay, however when you need to pick up a full weeks worth it is a different story. Six lesson plans and materials and then enough sheets for each of these classes at least five times over leads to a very heavy bag.

Once our prep was done and we had recieved our first pick up schedule, with a lovely 6am wake up call may I add, it was time for an early night. The nerves had crept up on both of us but there was also excitement with it. My first class back went rather well, i was able to keep myself composed and went through the lesson plan effectively but that did not stop the class from running circles around me.

It was also about time for Beth to have her first class, seeing as her class before Tet was cancelled. In her words “Grade Two are crazy!” Somehow in all the tips and helpful guides we have been given it also doesn’t tell us how to make teaching cat, mat, bat and hat last fourty minutes. I suppose we can always rely on going to the basics, games, games and yes you guessed it more games.

We luckily made it through the next couple of days teaching. We built our confidence and even made a lesson plan or two along the way, but then the news came that was the start of a very downward spiral. The schools are shutting because of the Coronavirus…
