Vietnam roads and how not to die on them

Why can’t motorcycles hold themselves up?

Because they are two-tired

Possibly useful info, but we’re probably not going to help

This guy is just scootering along on his phone, totally winging it

The roads here are crazy!!!

This is Hai Phong when we went out for dinner at about half six, seven ish at night, trying to get the chance to cross the road is interesting!

Crossings are not a thing here, you just pick a spot and walk, don’t stop, slow down or speed up. Walk straight and don’t make eye contact. They kind of just morph around you, like a river with rocks in.

Out trip out for lunch by DTLC was no less busy, this is around 11.30am, so there’s not rush hour and it’s not a particularly busy part of town, the roads are just like this… All the time.

Also apparently you can carry anything on a moped, these are the cutest of examples but the man we saw the other day transporting a bush on the front of his bike which covered all of his vision was an interesting life choice.

Ooo, interesting fact about driving in Vietnam we were told by the woman from the Vietnamese British embassy is that since January 2020 it is now illegal to drive after consuming alcohol, before that you could be hammered and it was fine, I mean they’re only 50 years behind.

Traffic here is an experience, not necessarily bad, it’s just complete chaos but somehow very organised, like everyone is doing very illogical things but noone has hit each other yet.

My favourite traffic related occurance so far is a when a woman who had a toddler infront of her on the bike and a child behind was riding in the middle of a three lane bridge when the toddlers face mask flew off (I mean it didn’t have a helmet on but the mask would totally solve all issues) she then stopped and turned her bike around, drove the wrong way up the bridge with bikes and cars coming at her, stopped in the middle of the road tilted the bike sideways to pick this mask off the floor (which she then couldn’t give back to the child as it has been run over by several other bikes) then righted herself and the children on the bike and set back off.

I think Dan likes the one where a bunch of teenagers were doing wheelies and the one kid at the back frogot his mate was on the back of his bike when he copied did a wheelie and his mate ended up in the middle of the road still holding his helmet because he was too cool to wear it.

We’ve decided it would be super entertaining to see some of these people drive in the UK, the chaos caused when they just don’t feel like stopping at red lights would be interesting.

When we first arrived we were told by a nice vietnamese man that when they see a red light their heads say stop but their hearts say, nahh let’s just gooooo.

Which if it wasn’t related to traffic would be a beautiful way to live
